Benefits of Anaerobic Digestion

Renewable Energy Generation

A digester not only removes one of the sources of greenhouse gases, but it transforms this once destructive element into biogas that is environmentally friendly and allows people to reduce their dependance on fossil fuels. Renewable natural gas (RNG) is a term used to describe biogas that has been upgraded for use in place of fossil natural gas. RNG is used as a transportation fuel, heat source and a fuel to generate electricity.

2

Odor Reduction

Digesters reduce odor in the area surrounding the dairy farm because the gases that produce the pungent smell, sometimes referred to as “dairy air” are consumed in the digestion process.  A digester is a sealed structure, and the end product is a pathogen free material.

3

Significant Reduction and Diversion of Waste Streams

Households, restaurants, resorts, food retailers, manufacturers and processors all generate significant volumes of food waste. This material has traditionally been sent to landfills, wastewater treatment plants and, in some instances, to composting sites. These alternatives all have fundamental challenges related to the sustainable disposal of organics. AD provides a comprehensive waste diversion solution, as well as significant reduction of greenhouse gases making it both more efficient and beneficial than alternative disposal options.

4

Preserving Ground Water and Waterways

As a result of AD, traditional application of manure and other synthetic fertilizers are removed as the organic material is processed by the AD thus creating a cleaner and more sustainable liquid fertilizer. Agriculture is the largest single user of our water resources. Over 80% of food waste is actually made of water. AD systems remove the solid materials, and then treat and reclaim digested water to be used agriculturally. This has significant benefits to watershed preservation and in locations of water constraints, meaningful supply is produced for the agricultural communities. Recognizing the scarcity of our water resources is an important step to creating lasting sustainable change.

5

Greenhouse Gas Reduction

The effect of organic waste in producing greenhouse gasses is one of the biggest environmental issues facing us today. Methane is a major contributor to climate change, but it is an issue we can mitigate using technology. Processing manure as well as food waste through AD captures greenhouse gasses and turns a problem into an economically viable sustainable solution.

6

Community Involvement

We partner with local utilities and municipalities to ensure that “green power” can be offered throughout communities. Our team has helped many utilities and municipalities better their sustainability programs. Whether the biogas is converted to electricity or upgraded into pipeline quality renewable natural gas (RNG), we always seek local partners who care about green energy, and have seen great success in the creation of sustainable programs ensuring that communities have access to renewable power for years to come.
